Adding colored glass to clear molten glass.
Glass has been used as an artistic medium since 3,000 BC. Then, as
now, glass was created by melting a mixture of silica sand and
lime. Color is added to clear glass by adding metallic oxides.
Copper, for instance, creates green or blues tones. Manganese
creates purple. Colors like red, orange or yellow are
made by adding gold or silver.
Adding the colored glass to the outside of the working piece will coat it in
the colors, allowing for a myriad of designs not otherwise possible.
